Someone downloads an app like this so that hackers get access to their phone’s files, messages and camera. According to cybersecurity form Norton, hackers gain control of their computer or mobile device from a distance through crewware. It can also see and hear you through your device’s camera and microphone.

Researchers found 1,095 such apps, which were downloaded more than 1 million times between 2017 and 2019.
